    Mastering the Quickdraw

    with Ken DeWaard

Polish your Quickdraw skills with an experienced professional. The two hour Quickdraw challenge on Saturday, May 5, does not have to be intimidating. In fact it can be a fun and productive exercise. The workshop will cover strategies to achieve a great Quickdraw painting; a winning “point of view”, simplification through color, compositional design and beauty in the brushwork.

Ken has placed and won Quickdraw competitions across the country, include the 2016 Mexico Beach Quickdraw. Do not miss this opportunity to hone your skills. The mini-workshop will provide both group and individual instruction and coaching.

Ken is the winner of the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air Artists' Choice award in 2010, 2012 and 2017.

Meet at the Lighthouse in George Core Park and Ken will select a painting location from there. There is adequate parking within the park and on Harborview Drive. The workshop, May 4, starting at 9 am. $95 per person, register online.

Bring a sack lunch or plan to lunch at one of the great cafes in Port St. Joe.

As the fishing and oystering business has dried up along the Forgotten Coast, so has the need for new boats. Former apprentices have given up the trade to take work elsewhere.

Fortunately, John P. Lasater, IV, was able to track down two boatbuilders and spent a week's residency painting the work and faces of the boatbuilders still plying their craft in the area, including Luther Hatfield of Eastpoint and Fred Buskins of Port St. Joe.

Please visit the Eastpoint Visitor's Center to view these works highlighting one of the Forgotten Coast's disappearing legacies.

The paintings change by the hour and often art collectors arrive daily to make their selections from the most recent deliveries. Collectors from across the country watch the online gallery where each painting is photographed and posted immediately to the website. If you cannot attend in person, you may view the paintings online. A painting can be selected and easily processed over the telephone. For the cost of shipping, the painting will be delivered to your door. Simply call 800-378-8419.

'Plein Air Painting' conjures images of bright beaches, colorful skies and highly chromatic romps through the color spectrum. Charlie Hunter's work on the other hand, while still pure plein air, tends toward the monochromatic, relying on value, edges and composition to create a compelling image.

Let's talk about other ways of 'getting to yes' with a painting; stepping away from the expected painterly touchstones (Sorolla, Zorn, etc.) and embracing the unexpected -- photography, illustration and poster design, etc. What are some of the unusual influences in your work, and how do those influences show themselves?

Charlie might also segue into why his cats hate him. Highly entertaining!
